Here it is, Friday, Feb. 22, 2008. We are getting an ice storm and I have the good fortune to be off today. If you work at Patuxent River Navy Base, we all get what is called a CWS schedule. A compressed work schedule. You work 9 hours a day Mon-Thurs. Then you get every other Friday off. On your working Friday you work 8 hours. It all comes out to 40 hours a week.
So I am off today. I see some people driving down the road--I feel sorry for them having to go out in this crappy ice storm. I can see the ice all over the deck. I hope they all will drive safely and be careful.
But, in the midst of all that gloom I can hear one of my favorite sounds: chirping birds. The one bright spot to the icky day. They remind me that spring isn't too far away. We have seen some signs of spring--daffodils getting ready to bloom, more birds and Wal-Mart's garden center is set up and stocked!
Every year we get a winter thaw, the daffodils start to bloom and then bam! We always get hit with at least one more snow or ice storm. And every year I fear they won't survive the freezing weather--and every year they do. Sure brightens the gloomy winter days to look out and see birds and flowers.
I'm sipping my tea and enjoying another favorite: I Love Lucy. I have all the DVDs and I'm watching them prepare for their trip to Europe. Her vacations were the best.
